Surviving Middle School in Chapel Hill
September 25th, 2007
Surviving Middle school in Chapel Hill is an exciting time but also a time of change for children and parents. Here are some tips for surviving Middle School:
It’s always hard to enter a new school, especially middle school, when you move from one class to the next. Encourage your kids to participate in school clubs, sports and other activities. That is a great way to make new friends and stay connected to other kids and their parents.
Stay connected with teachers and guidance counselors. Our young teens are expected to become more independent however not all kids at this age are ready. Some may feel overwhelmed and unorganized. Many middle schoolers confide in their guidance counselor about personal and school related issues. Parents are also at a loss. There is less day to day involvement for them than in elementary school.
Teach your children to be themselves and to make good choices, not just to ‘follow the crowd’. Look for friends who make you feel good.
Along with physical changes, teens experience mood swings and peer conflicts. They go from feeling cocky, to self-doubting, to being bored, to being excited, to feeling self-conscious. Each child goes through this period at a different rate and a different way. This leads to worrying and may ultimately affect your childs ability to concentrate at school and at home. Always encourage your children to do what is right and to talk about how they feel. Explain that the physical changes and the emotional rollercoaster may feel awkward at times but this is what kids go through at this age.
Popularity is no guarantee of what will make you a successful adult. Getting good grades, staying healthy and being a good person are qualities at any age that will pay off and get appreciated.
Distractions and change are inevitable in middle school. But if you are aware of the changes your children are experiencing and understand, you can help them to enjoy these three trying years.
